September 2001 School Census

Summary results from the September 2001 School Census are published today by the Scottish Executive Education Department in the statistical bulletin Summary Results of the September 2001 School Census.

The majority of these results relate to the national picture for Scotland for publicly funded schools (education authority, grant-aided and self-governing), although some statistics are provided for independent schools.

The main findings of the National Statistics Publication are:

All Schools :

  • At September 2001, there were 3,010 primary, secondary and special schools in Scotland, of which 2,855 were publicly funded schools.
  • At September 2001, there were 775,474 pupils attending schools in Scotland, a decrease of 5,960 from September 2000.
  • The total number of full time equivalent (FTE) teachers in Scotland increased from 52,128 at September 2000 to 52,142 at September 2001.
  • The overall pupil/teacher ratio for publicly funded schools in Scotland fell from 15.4 at September 2000 to 15.2 at September 2001. Similarly, the overall pupil/teacher ratio for independent schools in Scotland fell from 9.4 to 9.3 over the same period.

Primary Schools (publicly funded) :

  • There were 420,523 pupils attending publicly funded primary schools in September 2001, a decrease of 4,698 pupils since September 2000.
  • There were 2,271 publicly funded primary schools at September 2001, seven less than at September 2000.
  • The total number of classes in publicly funded primary schools at September 2001 was 17,236, a reduction of 142 from September 2000.
  • The average class size in publicly funded primary schools at September 2001 was 24.3 pupils, a fall of 0.1 compared with September 2000.
  • At September 2001, over 99% of pupils in single stage P1-P3 classes with only one teacher, were being taught in classes with 30 pupils or less.
  • The total number of full time equivalent (FTE) teachers in publicly funded primary schools at September 2001 was 22,289, a reduction of 140 since September 2000.
  • There was 7,236 FTE non-teaching staff in publicly funded primary schools at September 2001, an increase of 1,492 compared with September 2000.
  • The above trends have led to a decrease in the pupil:teacher ratio in publicly funded primary schools, from 19.0 at September 2000 to 18.9 at September 2001. The pupil:adult ratio has also decreased, from 15.1 at September 2000 to 14.2 at September 2001.
  • At September 2001, 38% of teachers and 16% of pupils in publicly funded primary schools had an e-mail address in school compared with 21% and 6% respectively at September 2000.
  • Since September 2000, there has been an increase of approximately 14,200 modern computers used for teaching purposes in publicly funded primary schools.
  • The above trends have led to a decrease in the pupil:modern computer ratio from 18:1 at September 2000 to 11:1 at September 2001 in publicly funded primary schools.

Secondary Schools (publicly funded) :

  • At September 2001, there were 316,368 pupils attending publicly funded secondary schools, a decrease of 1,336 pupils since September 2000.
  • There were 387 publicly funded secondary schools at September 2001, two less than at September 2000.
  • The total number of FTE teachers in publicly funded secondary schools at September 2001 was 24,552, an increase of 27 since September 2000.
  • The above trends have led to a decrease in the pupil:teacher ratio in publicly funded secondary schools, from 13.0 at September 2000 to 12.9 at September 2001.
  • At September 2001, 80% of teachers and 68% of pupils in publicly funded secondary schools had an e-mail address in school, compared with 50% and 43% respectively at September 2000.
  • Since September 2000, there has been an increase of approximately 11,200 modern computers used for teaching purposes in publicly funded secondary schools.
  • The above trends have led to a decrease in the pupil:modern computer ratio from 7:1 at September 2000 to 5:1 at September 2001.

Special Schools / Units (publicly funded) :

  • At September 2001, there were 8,183 pupils based in publicly funded special schools/units, a decrease of 135 pupils since September 2000.
  • There were 197 publicly funded special schools/units at September 2001, two more than at September 2000.
  • There were 2,029 FTE teachers in publicly funded special schools/units at September 2001, an increase of 55 since September 2000.
  • The above trends have led to a fall in the pupil:teacher ratio in publicly funded special schools/units, from 4.2 at September 2000 to 4.0 at September 2001.
  • At September 2001, 25% of teachers and 8% of pupils in publicly funded special schools/units had an e-mail address in school compared with 19% and 6% respectively at September 2000.
  • Since September 2000, there has been an increase of approximately 400 modern computers used for teaching purposes in publicly funded special schools/units.
  • The above trends have led to a fall in the pupil:modern computer ratio in publicly funded special schools/units, from 5:1 at September 2000 to 4:1 at September 2001.

A census of schools in Scotland is conducted each year in September. This School Census represents a snapshot of schools during the Census Week i.e. the week beginning Monday 10 September 2001. Although the content of the School Census varies from year to year, a core dataset is collected annually on the number of pupils and teachers from each school.
