Ayrshire plan to protect its habitat

25/01/2002

A plan to help protect and promote Ayrshire's local habitats and native animal species is launched today.

Ayrshire's Local Biodiversity Action Plan is part of the Executive's nationwide move to encourage habitats and local species to flourish. Every local authority is currently developing a plan for their area.

Deputy Minister for Environment and Rural Development Allan Wilson said:

"It is entirely appropriate that Burn's Night was chosen to launch Ayrshire's Biodiversity Action Plan. Robert poems are full of love for his local landscape and wild life: the Rivers Ayr and Doon , the beauty spot Craigieburn Wood, as well as the famous field mouse and the brown hare."

"Ayrshire's plan prioritises such declining species as the song thrush and the brown hare as well as the ecosystems of beauty-spots Ailsa Craig and the islands of Arran and Cumbrae

"Scotland is a beautiful country with a wide diversity of scenery, and it is vital that we protect our natural heritage for future generations to enjoy as much as Robert Burns did."
