Motorola - Reaction from the First Minister

24/04/2001

Commenting on the announcement made today by Motorola, the First Minister said:

"This is an extremely bleak day for the Motorola work force in Bathgate and for the whole community. The Scottish Executive and the UK Government have left no stone unturned in recent weeks trying to persuade Motorola to retain their Bathgate plant. I am very disappointed that Motorola have nevertheless resolved to close the plant. But I firmly and honestly believe that there was nothing further that we could have done to prevent Motorola making the decision they have announced today.

"We will now turn our efforts towards doing everything possible to help ensure that those made redundant in Bathgate are able to find new jobs."
