Dance Is At The Heart Of Scottish Communities
30/10/2000
Dance is playing an important role in building communities throughout Scotland, and in the personal and social education of people of all ages, according to an HMI report published today.
Traditional and Contemporary Dance in Community Settings explores good practice already in place across Scotland. Dance is an enjoyable part of most people's lives but it has a much wider value in communities.
The report is in line with the National Cultural Strategy's recognition of the value of community-based dance. It also shows how national funding has supported a number of initiatives.
A number of short case studies are contained in the report, each focusing on a national or local organisation. All of them are active in and helping to build communities throughout Scotland.
The report is aimed at Local Authorities which are keen to develop arts policies and programmes, and also community education providers, schools and others who are interested in the place of dance in Scottish society.
