Galbraith launches new guidelines to put "the child at the centre"
28/02/2000
A package of support for staff in early years education and care centres was launched today by Minister for Children and Education, Sam Galbraith.
Unveiling the new self-evaluation guide, 'The Child at the Centre' and a staff support video, 'Learning is Magic', at Olivebank Children's Centre in Musselburgh, Mr Galbraith said:
"The Executive attaches great importance to the quality of services for children. The last few years have seen a huge expansion in the provision of care and education services for young children. We are working hard to deliver our twin commitments of a free part-time pre-school place for every child and affordable childcare in every neighbourhood.
"But we are not simply concerned with an increase in provision - we are also aiming for excellence in the delivery of these services. Both 'The Child at the Centre' and 'Learning is Magic' reflect our commitment to developing quality services.
"The development of both care and education services are a key component of our social inclusion strategy and I think it is particularly apt that we are here today at a centre that reflects so many of the key features of a truly inclusive policy".
The new self-evaluation guide is intended for use by all centres providing care and education for the 3-5 age group, and should also be of interest to centres providing services for older or younger children.
BACKGROUND
1. Olivebank Children's Centre offers district wide support for children aged 2-5 and their families. Its primary aim is to provide services for children in need and to promote social welfare. The centre currently caters for 55 children.
2. 'The Child at the Centre' is one of the first products of the Scottish Executive's policy to support integrated services for young children. It aims to provide practical support for staff in both care and education centres.
3. The 'Learning is Magic' video was produced jointly by the Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum and St Andrew's Campus. It provides advice to staff on assessing and reporting on young children's development and progress.
