Sowing Extension for Set-Aside Announced

28/04/1999

In recognition of the difficulties experienced by Scottish farmers because of the wet weather over recent months, The Scottish Office Agriculture Department has extended the date by which a green cover must be established on land set aside under the 1999 Arable Area Payments Scheme (AAPS). The revised sowing date is May 31, 1999.

The Department has also asked the EU to grant a derogation to extend the sowing date of crops under the 1999 AAPS but until an announcement is made that deadline remains at May 15.

Farmers are reminded that their IACS forms must be submitted to the Department by the May 15 deadline irrespective of any adverse sowing conditions.

BACKGROUND

Under the Arable Area Payments Scheme set-aside management rules, set-aside land cannot be cultivated between May 1 and July 15; and green covers on set-aside land must thus normally have been established by May 1.
