Lord Sewel consults on fish farming guidance

09/10/1998

Draft guidance on future development of the fish farming industry to advise potential developers, guide those charged with regulation and inform bodies and individuals with an interest in the development of the industry has today been issued by Scottish Fisheries Minister Lord Sewel.

The consultation paper updates existing guidance and supports the proposal to be implemented, pending legislation, to transfer planning responsibilities for fish farm developments to local authorities. The guidance also provides guidelines on location as well as proposing a presumption against further fish farming developments on the east coast.

Lord Sewel said:

"This draft guidance provides sound advice for the sustainable development of the Scottish fish farming industry and complements some of the initiatives already taken by some sectors of the industry. I would encourage all those with an interest in the future of this important industry to participate fully in the consultation."

BACKGROUND

1. It is envisaged that the new non-statutory interim scheme will be implemented shortly.

2. Primary legislation to transfer full planning responsibility for licensing of marine fish farms to local authorities will be for the Scottish Parliament to consider.

3. The consultation period will last until 14 December 1998.
