June catch limits for non-sector vessels: North Sea and West of Scotland

Fisheries Departments today announced details of the changes to the management arrangements which will apply to appropriately licensed UK registered or British owned fishing vessels over 10 metres overall length from 0001 hours on Monday 1 June 1998 in certain North Sea and West of Scotland fisheries.

The following arrangements apply only to those over ten metre vessels not in membership of a Producer Organisation which has been allocated a sectoral quota of the stock in question. Fisheries Departments are arranging for appropriate licence variations to be issued to all vessels concerned.

NORTH SEA AND WEST OF SCOTLAND COD

The sum of all amounts of cod caught during any calendar month in ICES Divisions IIa (EC Zone), Vb (EC Zone) and VIa and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed a combined monthly quota restriction of 2.5 tonnes.

Of these amounts, however, the sum of all amounts of cod caught in ICES Division Vb (EC Zone) and VIa and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 500kgs.

NORTH SEA AND WEST OF SCOTLAND HADDOCK

The sum of all amounts of haddock caught during any calendar month in ICES Divisions IIa (EC Zone), Vb (EC Zone) and VIa and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed a combined monthly quota restriction of 2.5 tonnes.

Of these amounts, however, the sum of all amounts of haddock caught in ICES Divisions IIa (EC Zone) and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 750kgs.

NORTH SEA PLAICE

The sum of all amounts of plaice caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not 1.5 tonnes.

NORTH SEA AND WEST OF SCOTLAND NORWAY LOBSTER (NEPHROPS)

The sum of all amounts of Norway lobster (nephrops) caught during any calendar month in ICES Divisions IIa (EC Zone) and Vb (EC Zone) and Sub Areas IV (EC Zone) and VI and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed a combined monthly quota restriction of 3.5 tonnes.

Of this amount, however, the sum of all amounts of Norway lobster (nephrops) caught in ICES Vb (EC Zone) and Sub Area VI and retained on board, landed and trans-shipped shall not exceed 3 tonnes.

NORTH SEA ANGLERFISH

Fishing for anglerfish in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) is suspended.

NORTH SEA MEGRIM

The sum of all amounts of megrim caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 500kgs.

NORTH SEA TURBOT AND BRILL

The of all amounts of turbot and brill caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 300kgs.

NORTH SEA SKATE AND RAYS

The sum of all amounts of skate and rays caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 3.5 tonnes.

NORTH SEA DAB AND FLOUNDER

The sum of all amounts of dab and flounder caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 250kgs.

WEST OF SCOTLAND ANGLERFISH

The sum of all amounts of anglerfish caught during any calendar month in ICES Division Vb (EC Zone) and Sub Areas VI, XII (excluding Greenland EEZ) and XIV (excluding Greenland EEZ) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 1.5 tonnes.

These arrangements will be kept under review.

BACKGROUND

1. Restrictions to existing TAC stocks prior to the above changes:

1. North Sea and West of Scotland cod - 3.5 tonnes (max 500 kgs per month West of Scotland cod)

2. North Sea and West of Scotland haddock - 2 tonnes (max 1 tonne per month North Sea haddock)

3. North Sea plaice - 500 kgs

4. North Sea and West of Scotland Norway lobster (nephrops) - 3 tonnes (max 2 tonne per month West of Scotland nephrops)

5. North Sea anglerfish - 2 tonnes

6. North Sea megrim - 750 kgs

7. North Sea turbot/brill - 250 kgs

8. North Sea skate/rays - 2.5 tonnes

9. North Sea dab/flounder - 200 kgs

10. West of Scotland anglerfish - 1 tonne

2. Other current restrictions:

1. North Sea and West of Scotland whiting - 1 tonne (combined)

2. North Sea and West of Scotland saithe - 500 kgs (combined)

3. North Sea sole - 200 kgs

4. North Sea hake - 100 kgs

5. Norway Others - suspended

6. North Sea lemon/witch - 500 kgs

7. Rockall cod - suspended

8. Rockall haddock - suspended

9. West of Scotland plaice - 500 kgs

10. West of Scotland sole - 100 kgs

11. Western hake - 3.5 tonnes

12. West of Scotland megrim - 1.5 tonnes

13. West of Scotland pollack - 750 kgs
