North sea and west of Scotland whitefish non-sector quota management arrangements for over 10 metre vessels

Fisheries Departments today announced details of the management arrangements which will apply to appropriately licensed UK registered or British owned fishing vessels over 10 metres overall length from 00.01 hours on Wednesday 1 April 1998 in certain North Sea and West of Scotland fisheries.
The following arrangements apply only to those over 10 metre vessels not in membership of a Producer Organisation which has been allocated a sectoral quota of the stock in question. Fisheries Departments are arranging for appropriate licence variations to be issued to all vessels concerned.
North Sea and West of Scotland Haddock
The sum of all amounts of haddock caught during any calendar month in ICES Divisions IIa (EC Zone), Vb (EC Zone) and VIa and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 2 tonnes.
Of these amounts, however, the sum of all amounts of haddock caught in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and Sub Area IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 1 tonne.
North Sea Sole
The sum of all amounts of sole caught during any calendar month in ICES Sub Areas II and IV and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 150 kgs.
North Sea Megrim
The sum of all amounts of megrim caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 500 kgs.
North Sea Anglerfish
The sum of all amounts of anglerfish caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 2 tonnes.
North Sea Skates and Rays
The sum of all amounts of skates and rays caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 2.5 tonnes.
North Sea Dab and Flounder
The sum of all amounts of dab and flounder caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 200 kgs.
North Sea Lemon Sole and Witch
The sum of all amounts of lemon sole and witch caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea (EC Zone) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 350 kgs.
North Sea Turbot and Brill
The sum of all amounts of turbot and brill caught during any calendar month in ICES Division IIa (EC Zone) and the North Sea and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 250 kgs.
Western Hake
The sum of all amounts of hake caught during any calendar month in ICES Division Vb (EC Zone) and Sub Areas VI, VII, XII (excluding Greenland EEZ) and XIV (excluding Greenland EEZ) and retained on board, landed or trans-shipped shall not exceed 3 tonnes.
These arrangements will be kept under review.
BACKGROUND
1. At its December meeting, the Fisheries Council agreed that from 1 January 1998, TACS for North Sea Megrim, North Sea Anglerfish, North Sea Skates and Rays, North Sea Dab and Flounder, North Sea Lemon Sole and Witches and North Sea Turbot and Brill should be fully allocated between Member States as national quotas.
Fisheries Departments have set monthly catch limits for these new stocks from the beginning of April for vessels in the non-sector.
2. Restrictions to existing TAC stocks prior to the above changes:
1. North Sea haddock - 1.5 tonnes
2. West of Scotland haddock - 1.5 tonnes
3. North Sea sole - 50 kgs
4. Western Hake - 2 tonnes
3. Other current restrictions:
1. North Sea and West of Scotland cod
(max 500 kgs per month West of Scotland cod) - 5 tonnes
2. North Sea and West of Scotland whiting
(max 750 kgs per month West of Scotland whiting) - 1 tonne
3. North Sea and West of Scotland saithe (combined) - 500 kgs
4. North Sea plaice - 500 kgs
5. North Sea hake - 100 kgs
6. North Sea and West of Scotland nephrops
(combined) - 3 tonnes
7. Norway Others - Suspended
8. Rockall cod - Suspended
9. Rockall haddock - Suspended
10. West of Scotland plaice - 500 kgs
11. West of Scotland sole - 100 kgs
12. West of Scotland anglers - 1 tonne
13. West of Scotland megrim - 1.5 tonnes
14. West of Scotland pollack - 750 kgs
