The fourth International Festival of the Sea was held in Leith from 23-26 May 2003.

The four-day maritime celebration dominated the docks area around the Ocean Terminal shopping and leisure complex.

As well as the on shore attractions there was a variety of vessels, including tall ships, anchored along the quayside.

Puppets at Festival of the Sea

Visitors were entertained by a multi-headed sea dragon and ballet-dancing octopuses on stilts, which were part of a nautical parade celebrating Leith's seafaring history.

An exhibition area included displays ranging from model boats to a 100ft inflatable blue whale. Traditional maritime craftsmen demonstrated their skills and allowed visitors to 'have a go'.

The festival, supported by EventScotland, Scottish Enterprise Edinburgh and Lothians, The City of Edinburgh Council, VisitScotland, The Royal Navy and title sponsors Forth Ports PLC, was the biggest held in Leith since the Tall Ships Race in 1995.

The first festival took place in Bristol in 1996 and has been held twice in Portsmouth since then.
