Current Status

The specific targets for NHSScotland are to reduce CO2 emissions for oil, gas, butane and propane usage annually by 3% to 2014/15; and NHSScotland to continue to reduce energy consumption annually by 1% to 2014/15. During 2010/11, NHSScotland secured a 4.6% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 3.5% reduction in energy consumption.

HEAT Target

NHSScotland to reduce energy-based carbon emissions and to continue a reduction in energy consumption to contribute to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.

E: Reduce Carbon Emissions and Energy Consumption

Why is this HEAT target important?

A reduction in energy-based carbon emissions and in energy consumption will make a significant contribution towards the Scottish Government's aim to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 50 per cent by 2050 and the interim target of a 42 per cent reduction by 2020.

A reduction in energy consumption is also important in the context of increasing global fuel costs and the impact of the resulting cost increases on the delivery of core NHS services.

Both the efficiency target and carbon target are designed to not only achieve NHSScotland's contribution to the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009 target but also ensure that NHSScotland continues to lead by example within the Public sector. This will ensure NHSScotland contributes to the Scottish Government's National Outcome to "reduce the local and global environmental impact of our consumption and production".

How are we performing?

Target due for delivery from 2010/11 through 2014/15

A new 2010/11 HEAT Target has been agreed which commits NHSScotland to reduce energy-based carbon emissions and to continue a reduction in energy consumption over the 5-year period to 2014/15 at which time the target will be reviewed based upon performance to that time. This target is designed to ensure NHSScotland contributes to the greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets set in the Climate Change (Scotland) Act 2009.

The specific targets for NHSScotland are to reduce CO2 emissions for oil, gas, butane and propane usage based on a national average year-on-year reduction of 3% by 2014/15 as a milestone to the elimination of the use of fossil fuels by 2050; and NHSScotland to continue to reduce energy consumption based on a national average year-on-year energy efficiency target of 1% by 2014/15 as a milestone to achieving an overall improvement by 2050 of 30% on the comparative performance as at 2009/10.

During 2010/11, NHSScotland secured a 4.6% reduction in CO2 emissions and a 3.5% reduction in energy consumption. The tables below show energy consumption and CO2 emissions by NHS Board for 2010/11, along with each Board's target for 2011/12.
