Current Status

The number of people on the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) dementia register and other equivalent sources was 40,195 in 2010/11.

HEAT Target

Each NHS Board will achieve agreed improvements in the early diagnosis and management of patients with dementia by March 2011.

T: Dementia

Why is this HEAT target important?

The target supports a commitment to achieve improvements in the early diagnosis and management of people with dementia. This is supported by physical and mental health reviews every 15 months along with an assessment of carers needs which includes an appraisal of the impact of caring on the care giver.

How are we performing?

Target due for delivery in 2010/11

The target is to increase the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia to 39,578 by March 2011.

The performance measure used for this target is the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia on the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) dementia register and other equivalent sources. The baseline for this measure is the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia on the QOF dementia register in 2006/07 (29,761 people). The number of people on this register increased from 35,816 in 2009/10 to 40,195 in 2010/11, an increase of 12.2 per cent.

The graph below shows the number of people diagnosed with Dementia since 2006/07.

Dementia diagnoses since 2006/07

Dementia figures used for the HEAT target include data from sources other than QOF for a small number of practices that do not take part in QOF. They can also include data from a small number of practices that do not have signed off QOF data, as these non-signed off data still contribute towards the target. As a result these figures will differ for some NHS Board areas from the main QOF prevalence data published elsewhere.

The table below shows dementia diagnoses by NHS Board in 2010/11.
