Social media, as you will be aware, has become an increasingly common method of communicating and engaging with the wider public. The Scottish Government uses social media where it is an effective, innovative and low-cost option for communicating our work.
Since last year, the Scottish Government's main corporate website at www.scotland.gov.uk has incorporated a Twitter feed that automatically tweets individual news items as they are published. The Scottish Government has also had a dedicated YouTube channel hosting its video content, since 2008. Neither of these social media resources has cost implications associated with their establishment or operation, as they are regarded as part of the everyday work of the Digital Team.
The Scottish Government's Strategic Marketing Unit uses social media as part of the communications mix to support public information and social advertising campaigns. While social media is an emerging platform and hard to define within one discipline, it is undertaken as part of the broader PR strategy, in the case of our campaign work. A breakdown of the latest figures on PR spend can be found at:

Social media as part of the PR mix has an increasingly valuable role, generating understanding of campaign key messages and interaction with segmented audiences online. The Scottish Government's PR activity, which is integrated with other communications, aims to ensure value-for-money, and is comprehensively evaluated to ensure it delivers against the Government's purpose and five strategic objectives.
No Iphone applications have so far been developed by the Scottish Government.
