1. Do Scottish Executive civil servants in the top two grades receive any health benefits, such as private health insurance? If so, how many civil servants are entitled to this benefit and how many take it up?

Scottish Executive (SE) Civil Servants in the top two grades do not receive any health benefits such as private health insurance. All new entrants to the Senior Civil Service (which may include those in the top two grades) are offered the opportunity of a free medical examination, carried out by Lothian Occupational Health as part of an occupational health contract operated within SE.

2. Are SE civil servants in the top two grades entitled to any travel benefits/ subsidies? If so, what is the nature of these benefits/ subsidies, how many civil servants are entitled to them and how many take it up?

The SE has authority to make travel and subsistence payments to all staff to reimburse travel and subsistence costs incurred on official business. Civil Servants in the top two grades use these arrangements when required.

3. Are SE civil servants in the top two grades entitled to free/ subsidised membership or use of clubs/gyms/associations/societies or access to country estates?

SE civil servants in the top two grades are entitled to membership of the Victoria Quay Health and Fitness Club which is available at a moderate cost to all members of staff. Health and Fitness facilities are also available in some other SE buildings.

The Scottish Executive has also negotiated corporate membership with a number of gyms and health clubs for all members of SE staff, regardless of grade.

All members of staff in SE, including the top two grades, are entitled to a 20% discount on taking out membership of Friends of Historic Scotland.

4. Are SE civil servants in the top two grades entitled to any benefits/subsidies/grants to pay part (or all) of the school fees/bursaries for their children.

SE civil servants in the top two grades are not entitled to any benefits, subsidies or grants to pay part (or all) of the school fees/bursaries for their children, by virtue of their employment.
