Learning Directorate

Director: Sarah Smith

Learning Directorate has responsibility for Scottish Government policy on school based learning and national qualifications, through partnership working and shared priorities as encapsulated by Curriculum for Excellence.

Purpose

Learning Directorate has lead responsibility, working with Ministers and a range of national partners to improve outcomes for learners, to ensure there is an effective school system - as well as the wider learning environment - and to ensure that our young people are successful learners, effective contributors, confident individuals and responsible citizens.

As a Directorate within Scottish Government (SG), it also works with Ministers and other Directorates, to support development and delivery of the full range of Government policies, to ensure the people of Scotland experience high quality interaction with Government, and to support the democratic process.

Key Responsibilities

The Directorate has lead responsibility for National Outcome 4: Our young people are successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. It contributes to all other National Outcomes, particularly those related to children and young people, education and skills and to the quality of public services, and to the overarching Purpose, largely through delivery of National Outcome 4.

It does this by working with Ministers and partners to raise educational and wider learning standards for every child and young person, raising overall standards as well as closing the gap, while also ensuring the school system contributes to the wider set of outcomes.
