Employability, Skills & Lifelong Learning

Director, Andrew Scott

The Purpose

Our purpose is to make people ready for work and to reshape our post 16 learning and employment systems to do this better. In the short-term we will identify and deliver actions to help those affected by the current economic circumstances. In the long-term we will create the skilled and educated workforce that is required to help drive sustainable economic growth.

Key Responsibilities

The directorate is responsible for Scottish Government policy on all aspects of learning that take place after people leave school - from basic employability training through to post-doctoral research. The Directorate takes a close interest in the interface between the world of learning (training, skills enhancement, academic) and that of work/enterprise/economic growth.

Three broad streams of activity: helping young people to make transitions from education into work; helping people young and old to find jobs and participate in work; creating the framework for the acquisition of higher levels skills and pushing forward the frontiers of knowledge.

By raising education and skill levels we increase the chances of individuals participating in the workforce, by increasing skill levels and widening access to opportunities we help individuals obtain employment with better pay and better progression. By raising levels of research and innovation and making the best use of our skills we contribute to raising productivity.
